On the contrary, the caves are shaped by many different large and small islands, over time gradually creating caves with unique shapes

1. ​​Where are Dark and Bright Caves, Ha Long Bay? How to get there?
Dark and Bright Caves, sometimes referred to as one destination—Dark-Bright Cave—span about 1.1 kilometers and sit in the northeast of Lan Ha Bay, part of the Cat Ba Archipelago, close to the border with Ha Long Bay. They are classic karst caves, shaped over time by the relentless erosion of limestone mountains due to the infiltration of seawater.

They are a captivating stop on tours of Lan Ha Bay. Travelers departing from the tourist port of Cai Beo in the southern part of Lan Ha Bay can reach the caves by boat in roughly 1 hour and 20 minutes. Along the journey, they can also visit Turtle Islet, Full Moon Islet, and But Islet, and explore Ba Trai Dao Beach and Cua Van Floating Village. For those coming from the north, it takes about 2 hours to reach the cave.

2. The best way to explore Dark and Bright Caves
2.1. Experience kayaking
Dark-Bright Cave is well-known for its picturesque kayak paddling routes, offering both safety and seclusion away from the regular waterway traffic. Surrounded by towering mountain ranges, the cave enjoys a serene atmosphere with gentle currents. 

Dark Cave, the longest among the four at over 200 meters, is quite narrow and dark inside. Exploring it requires a kayak equipped with a flashlight and is possible only during low tide. Bright Cave, Bat Cave, and Jellyfish Cave have higher ceilings, making them accessible to small boats or kayaks.

The route covering all four caves spans about 5.3 kilometers and takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete. If Dark Cave is not accessible due to tidal conditions or as instructed by the management unit, visitors can still paddle to explore the other three caves—a journey of about 4.1 kilometers in under 45 minutes. Kayaking in Ha Long Bay is permitted here in the morning from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and in the afternoon from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

3.1. Best time to visit
The best time to visit this renowned destination is from May to August, during the summer season. During this time, the sea is calm, the skies are clear, and there is plenty of sunshine and gentle breezes, making it perfect for activities like swimming, yachting, and exploring the bay.
If you decide to take the bamboo boat (rowed by local fishermen), be sure to bring your camera so you will not miss out on any breathtaking sights. If you do not have a lot of experience in water sports, getting a local fisherman to help you kayak is a safe choice. Make sure your phone and wallet are kept in a secure place if you choose to kayak on your own. Most of the time, you will need a few minutes to get used to steering the kayak.
